That Which Is Broken

And what it all means

Last week, I saw Leonora Watkins’ story, What’s the Broken Thing You Just Live With? I was about to write a response, thinking, “How much time have you got?”

Then I realized that there is a whole story in there, and it’s kind of the story of my life.

I’ll start with a partial list of the broken things:

The valance over the bathroom window blinds, which is broken off and is propped against the wall waiting to be put back up.

The valance over the kitchen window blinds that is crooked (but I honestly don’t think it’s noticeable unless you’re looking for it.)

Our ice maker, which spontaneously makes a few ice cubes on occasion, but more often fills the tray with water, making a solid block of ice.

The towel rod on our shower door which came loose on one side and now dips on that side instead of being horizontal.

The heater in the bathroom ceiling fan. This is a recent development, and it’s no problem in the summer, but winter is coming. Come to think of it, the light in that same fixture has worked only intermittently for years. Perhaps it’s time for a whole new fixture? Or should we wait till the fan breaks too and we’re three for three?
